In a significant move marking the strengthening of ties between Somalia and international agencies, His Excellency Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the President of Somalia, hosted Amy Epope, the Director General of UN Migration, in Mogadishu. The meeting took place at Villa Somalia, the official residence and the office of the President of Somalia.
In attendance of the meeting including President His Excellency Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Somalia Foreign Minister HE. Abshir Omar Jama and the Environmental Minister, HE. Khadija Al Makhmouze. The meeting was marked by substantive and engaging discussions, reflecting the commitment of both sides to foster collaboration and tackle pressing issues.
Migration and Returnees at the Forefront
Central to the discussion were issues surrounding migration and the sensitive topic of returnees. The international community, led by agencies such as the UN, emphasizes the importance of human rights in dealing with returnees. The principle asserts that the forceful return of migrants is not legal, particularly when they face threats to their life or freedom in their country of origin.
There were indications of a strong stance on the matter, with discussions on withholding support or other measures if returnees were not accepted.
Stabilization Plan and Defectors
The stabilization plan for Somalia, aiming at ensuring peace, security, and rebuilding after decades of conflict, was another significant point of discussion. The issue of defectors, particularly those from extremist groups who intend to reintegrate into society, poses both challenges and opportunities. Their successful reintegration is crucial for long-term stability, and international support in this domain can play a decisive role.
Climate Change: A Rising Concern
With Minister Khadija Al Makhmouze in attendance, climate change was inevitably on the agenda. Somalia, like many African nations, is on the front lines of climate-related challenges. Recurring droughts, desertification, and other environmental issues threaten not only the livelihoods of millions but also intensify migration patterns. Collaborative efforts between Somalia and global partners are essential in addressing these interconnected challenges.
The meeting at Villa Somalia underscores the significance Somalia places on international collaboration. With the guidance of the UN and other international partners, there’s hope that the nation can effectively address the multifaceted challenges it faces, ensuring a brighter future for its citizens.
