New York, June 24 2024 – Ambassador Abukar Osman, Somalias Permanent Representative to the United Nations spoke at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today discussing advancements in the nations governance and security sectors. He highlighted the start of efforts between the government and the UN to transition UNSOM into the Country Team.
Ambassador Osman mentioned to the UNSC that a joint technical group consisting of members from both Somalia and the UN has initiated discussions on how to proceed with this transition. The goal is to improve coordination and streamline support mechanisms in line with Somalias changing requirements. This process is anticipated to reinforce Somalias structures and bolster development initiatives.
During his speech Ambassador Osman underscored Somalias dedication to reforms in implementing a one person one vote electoral system. This shift signifies a move away from clan based power sharing approaches showcasing the Somali governments commitment, to inclusive and representative governance.
The upcoming national elections, set for year are intended to empower the people and strengthen processes in the nation.
Ambassador Osman also pointed out operations carried out by the Somali National Army (SNA) against the extremist group Al Shabaab. With support from allies the SNA has executed offensives leading to the recapture of key territories previously under insurgent control.
