New York September 21, 2023 – In a significant sideline event at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78) held in New York, H.E. Abshir Omar Jama, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somalia, and H.E. Dr. Ivica Dačić, First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Serbia, came together for a crucial dialogue.
The meeting showcased the commitment of both nations to strengthen bilateral ties, reflecting upon their shared interests on both regional and global levels. The ministers reviewed the advancements made in diplomatic, security, and trade cooperation since the signing of a memorandum of understanding on general cooperation in Belgrade in November 2022.
H.E. Abshir Omar Jama seized this opportunity to extend an invitation to the Serbian delegation, which notably included Marko Čadežf, the President of Serbia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Minister Jama highlighted the potential in Somalia’s key sectors, emphasizing the vast opportunities present in agriculture, livestock, fisheries, food processing, and healthcare, among other unexplored sectors. He passionately appealed for Serbian investment in these areas, believing it to be mutually beneficial for both nations.
Echoing the sentiments of shared progress, Minister Dačić expressed Serbia’s dedication to nurture a deeper collaboration with Somalia. His vision encompassed broader cooperation, encompassing not only security and economic facets but also focusing on increased social engagement between the two countries.
The sideline meeting at UNGA 78 underlined the significant strides that both Somalia and Serbia have taken to nurture their diplomatic relations, hinting at a promising future of collaboration and mutual growth.
